Free entry does not mean a busier page. The typical free profile in our catalog collects about a third fewer likes than the typical paid one, and the engagement numbers behind that go through why.
For choosing between the two, though, engagement is the side issue. Cost is the thing that will actually surprise you.
Cost is the real difference
A paid page has a known price. $10 median, $23 at the 90th percentile, and if the creator does not push paid messages, that is your entire spend.
A free page has no known price. It might cost nothing all month. It might cost $40 in unlocked messages by the second week. The variance is the point, both for the creator and against you.
When free is the right choice
- You want to see the tone of a page before committing to anything.
- You are exploring a niche you have not tried.
- You have the discipline to leave locked messages locked.
When paid is the right choice
- You want a predictable monthly number.
- You already know the creator from somewhere else and know what you are buying.
- You have learned that you do not, in fact, leave locked messages locked.
The pages that promise both

These tags record what the creator says. We cannot audit whether the messages stay free, so treat them as a filter for finding candidates rather than a guarantee.
The practical route
Start in the free section, sort by likes, and pick from the top of that list rather than the top of the whole catalog. You get the free-entry benefit without the abandoned-page problem.
